  • SOROKA, Joanna Thompson. Mrs. Soroka, a native and resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died on Sunday, January 3, 2016. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Timmonds Thompson and wife of the late Lt. Col. (USAF) Ronald John Soroka, with whom she shared numerous years as a military wife in Japan; Washington, D.C.; Alaska; and St. Louis; and for whom she kept home fires burning during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Colonel and Mrs. Soroka were married 50 years. Before leaving for Japan as a new bride to join her husband, Mrs. Soroka was employed with the Attorney General's Office in Montgomery and, while Colonel Soroka was assigned to the Presidential Air Lift Wing in Washington, D.C, she served as Personal Secretary for Mrs. Rita Williams Beale, wife of the U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica. Following Colonel Soroka's retirement from the Air Force in 1976, they returned to Montgomery where Mrs. Soroka was employed in numerous professional positions, including composing Resolutions for members of the Alabama Senate and Alabama House of Representatives as an Information Specialist with Legislative Reference Service. She also was a faithful member and active volunteer of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church and, most especially, enjoyed singing with the Adult Choir. Left to cherish the memory of Mrs. Soroka are her son, John Jeffrey Soroka and his wife Wendy Michelle; son, Marc Alan Soroka; grandson, Marc "Macky" Alan Soroka, Jr.; brother-in-law, John J. Soroka; brother-in-law, Thomas F. Soroka and his wife Elizabeth "Betty"; nephew, Gregory Thomas Soroka and his wife Amy; and other devoted family members and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
